It was my friend Malia's baby shower this weekend.
As you can probably tell from her blue mohawk, Malia is not your average person - in a very good way! Baby pastels and frou frou are not her, and are not for her baby. I decided to go with a lime green & monster theme, which I feel worked out well. Most everthing in the left photo I bought, while I made everything in the right photo. Yes, that gray onesie I embroidered says "Redrum". The sock monkey plays a song that scared my cat so bad, he would not come near me for a whole evening!
I wrapped everything in lime green & black to keep the theme going. The onesie at the right I finished embroidering the night before!
All the baby books out there were so smarmy and well, not Malia. In fiddling around with vintage images, I started think more and more about Edward Gorey. He has a drawing for every category I could imagine, and it worked out SO perfectly. I bound the book in some gray/green card stock that looked like and old library book.
That baby book is genius! :D
ReplyDeletethanks so much!
DeleteAMAZING!! What a wonderful gift to your friend! All the things are so well composed and you have a thought behind everything. I'm sure you are a very dear friend to Malia. Is it diaper wrapping (cant find an english word) you have sewn in the right picture?
ReplyDeleteThe book looks wonderful what a genious gift.
thanks! Yes they are what I could call diaper covers, I have more in the making. She will be using cloth diapers, so I thought they would jazz them up a bit.
DeleteWow, great work! She's so lucky to have a friend like you and the baby will have a wonderful grown up in her life.
ReplyDeleteWow! That's so sweet, thanks so much!
DeleteAn Edward Gorey baby book! How perfect! I need one of those if I ever have a child! and I love all the gifts you bought and made! I hope if I have a baby shower, my friends will be like you, and make and find wonderful things like that! So awesome!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Baby stuff can be so cutesy it makes me want to gag, creepy is so much better!
DeleteI think you might be right, I do see a resemblance. How fascinating!
ReplyDeleteI just came across this. We are trying to do an Edward Gorey theme for my sister's shower. If you have any other ideas, I'd love to know. I might just endeavor to try making my own Edward Gorey baby book.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I can't believe someone else had this idea. I googled "Edward Gorey Baby Shower" and there you were! My daughter is also an untraditional future mom. I've been searching images trying to stay away from the Gashlycrumb Tinies--just a tad too macabre for a shower.
ReplyDeleteIs there any chance you still have the doc that made the baby book?
Please make that baby book! i would buy it!
ReplyDeleteSo good to have the details about the Baby Shower & the Edward Gorey Baby Book also looks nice. Thanks a ton for the photos. I also threw a cute rainbow themed baby shower that was just perfect. I had booked the rental event venue for that. All of the guests enjoyed the entire party to the fullest.
