True Crime Cake & California

I visited my dad in California for 2 weeks and the moment I came back I started making this cake. My aunt loves true crime novels and I needed to top her previous birthday cakes. I designed the "cover" and had it printed on an edible sheet. Only $8! This was my first time working with rolled fondant, and although it was messy and scary it went pretty easy. My aunt loved the cake and is freezing the top part.

These are two of her past birthday cakes. The scrabble tiles were was made with gum paste. The cake on the right is 10 layers of ice cream flavours. I was so scared it was going to fall over!
I was at my dad's for 2 weeks and only managed to take pictures of his cats. Not even one of him on Father's day. Minnie on the left is a devil with a porcelain doll's face. She was glued to my side and sat at my feet every night. Midget in the middle is not all there and scared of every visitor ever, save me. Mikey on the right is wearing a toupee of Midget's hair!
On another note, my friends Willie and Alex, who have been separated by years worth of government bureaucracy were finally both together in Canada for the first time! They've been married for 4 years and have done everything by the book, but Alex could not cross the border. I'm so happy for them!

Osteology Dress & Cyborg Cat

Above is my new dress, made with Alexander Henry Osteology fabric. The dress is a mix of patterns - Simplicity 1699 for the skirt, Simplicity 1651 for the bodice and McCalls 6278 for the modified sleeves. Simplicity 1651 is a new pattern and while it looked smooth and nice, it was not so. The shoulder seams were so out of whack! They might fit if my shoulders were 3 inches higher and sloped upwards towards my ears! The front sweetheart neckline was also way too wide, thank goodness I cut the bodice in lining first! You can't see, but there are self covered buttons with skulls on the sleeves.

Max went to the vet to get his last round of boosters today. When I adopted his 2 years ago he weighed 10 pounds and he now weighs 12.5! When I was waiting for his I inquired about getting him micro chipped.after I heard some scary stats about missing kitties on tv. To my surprise it was only $40!
When I got home my boyfriend insisted on talking to him like a robot, now that he's a cyborg. Then he "forced" me to sing the theme song from Small Wonder to Max, which for some reason I know all the lyrics to...

Trip to California

Eating at Sal's in Fresno- Pile of birthday presents waiting for me!
Car show in Mariposa - German tourists swarming my dad's Cobra in Oakhurst
Mikey sleeping in my clothes - Sweet Pea & Minnie posing
Powell's Candy in Paso Robles
California was awesome! It was sunny and perfect the entire time, whilst it was raining and windy back home. I bought tons of fun things - shoes, pants, fakelite bracelets, beads, a 40's suit, fabric and most importantly, See's chocolate! There was a kitty or two to sleep with me every night and even an 4.3 earthquake to remind me of old times.

September Theme Post - To All the Cats I've Loved Before

For Sophistique Noir's September theme "Someone Special", I have 11 someone specials! Since I was a baby I have loved cats, my second word was kitty. My current someone special is Max, whom I am holding above. I got him from the pound 2 years ago. He was severely underweight, covered in fleas and had an upper respiratory infection that almost killed him. When I travel, I take a photo of him & not my boyfriend! He very kindly posed for this photo & got cat hair all over me.

Outfit Post - Striped Skirt

My skirt is from one of those factory shops in LA's garment district. Its just ok, I should make a better one. My shirt is from Forever 21, as well as my cardigan. I hope Forever 21 gets some normal clothes again, ethnic prints, high-low hemlines and cropped shirts are just so dreary. My necklace has my childhood cat's whisker in it, which I cast in resin. It makes me very happy wearing this, Chickie Baby's always with me!
