Monthly Theme Post - Maxi Skirts

Hmmm... maxi skirts.... Knee length skirts and I are friends, but maxi skirts an I are not really friends. The only skirt I have that could qualify for this theme post is the skirt to my half mourning 1880's costume. There is a  matching veiled hat, corset and jet jewelry that goes along with it as well. I made it 4 years ago for my mum's big Halloween party. She hired a magician to perform, who tied me up with ropes that fell apart - magically

Anyway... back to maxi skirts. One reason I don't like to wear them is that there is an extreme religious group in my area that subjugates women in a depressing way. They are unschooled, unable to go out alone and have to wear these awful skirts. Of course the men are not subject to any of these regulations. They make me sad when I see them, therefore when I think of maxi skirts I think of them.

  3. You look great! And did a fantastic job on your mourning outfit. I feel the same way about maxi skirts. They represent oppression for me.

  5. That skirt and outfit is amazing! I can fully understand your aversion against the religious group. Is it perhaps the Plymouth's (that's what they are called here). That group is living in a town in south Sweden and their children are not allowed to eat school lunch with their school mates and the women are not allowed to work. Horrible I think.

  6. Well, if you are only going to have one super-long skirt, this one is the perfect choice! The whole outfit is exquisite.

It's so very sad when women are treated as inferior beings. It's incredible to me that such things are still happening in these enlightened times! However, I wouldn't let that color your taste in fashion. You could always look at is as being free to make a choice - and that choice doesn't always have to be the opposite of what the oppressed are forced to wear. Revel in the variety that liberated women have available!

  7. That outfit is awesome! I adore it! I want it!

It is a shame maxi skirts make you think of that, I hate it when women are forced to live like that, but my clothing tastes seem to become more covering as time goes on, partly because I love Victorian clothing, partly because I am realising I need to protect my sensitive skin better from the sun, I have high cancer risk skin!

There is a group like that that have taken over half of the valley where my parents live, some people are holding out, others are just selling to them and moving away. Despite their subjugation of their girls, the council and everyone else support their religious freedom, and allow them to do as they wish.

It is strange how dressing more covered up by choice/ dressing for yourself, not men can feel liberating, but being forced to do so is subjugating. It is sad some women still cannot choose in this day and age!

  8. Oh my god, I think the exact same thing of maxi skirts, especially denim. Totally ruined a whole fashion trend for me - but thats okay, I like my skirts short and tight, anyway.
